The end came Tuesday night at Exeter when Villa Maria Academy scored with 17 seconds left in the first overtime to defeat defending state champion Emmaus 2-1 in a PIAA Class 3A semifinal game.

Emmaus still has the chance to win its fourth state title in five years after a 3-1 win over Methacton in the PIAA Class 3A quarterfinals. Easton, which was the only other local team left in the quarterfinals apart from the Green Hornets, saw its season end with a 3-1 loss to Central Bucks West.

Warwick won the title in 1987, 1999 and 2000. Bob Derr, who passed away on Monday at the age of 75, was the head coach for the Warriors in each of those state final games. A moment of silence in honor of Derr was observed before Tuesday’s game. In the other semifinal, Northern York beat Kennett 4-0.

Hope comes in many forms and for the Hershey field hockey team, it came in the form of a first quarter goal that gave the Trojans an early 1-0 lead over Warwick in the PIAA 2A quarterfinal at Memorial Park Stadium Saturday.

The Eastern Pennsylvania Conference sent two field hockey teams into the PIAA Class 3A field hockey quarterfinals on Tuesday night as Emmaus and Easton advanced. Southern Lehigh fell in Class 2A action. Northwestern Lehigh and Palmerton were both eliminated from the Class A field.

And this was one such occasion for Warwick’s field hockey coach. Hershey’s Taylor Valoczki had just found the back of the net early in the first quarter on Saturday, giving her team a 1-0 lead in the PIAA Class 2A quarterfinals.
