An Aiken Department of Public Safety officer was responding to a report about a shooting on Columbia Avenue Northeast when a victim was discovered nearby on Chesterfield Street, Coroner Darryl Ables said in a news release. That’s in the city limits, not far from Aiken High School.

In South Carolina, the governor has the lone ability to grant clemency and reduce a death sentence to life in prison. However, no governor has done that in the state’s 43 executions since the death penalty was restarted in the U.S. in 1976.

The death happened in the same prison where seven inmates were killed and 17 others were injured in a violent attack in 2018.
