Texas students will soon learn about Jesus’ Sermon on the Mount, the parable of the Prodigal Son and other Bible stories in their elementary classrooms. State Board of Education members on Friday narrowly approved 8-7 the state-crafted instructional materials infused with Christianity.

Texas has approved Bible-based teachings for pre-schoolers. Children as young as five years old will be taught stories from the Bible including Jesus’ Sermon on the Mount and the Prodigal Son, according to the classroom plans.

Public schools in Texas now have the option to use a new, state-written curriculum infused with Bible stories after the state’s school board voted in favor of the material on Friday.
