Stunned island residents and visitors posted videos and photos on social media showing cars, garages, patios and picket fences covered in floodwaters.

NEW HANOVER COUNTY, N.C. (WECT) - Several roads are closed and traffic is being affected by heavy rain Monday morning in the Wilmington area. Road closures as of 11:15 a.m. in Southport, per the city: The Town of Carolina Beach says that the community is advised to avoid driving while the flooding continues throughout the town.

The storm did flood several blocks of Carolina Beach, North Carolina, and bring widespread wind gusts over 40 mph. North Carolina's governor urged people to stay off the roads in stormy conditions.

One of the hardest hit areas was Brunswick County, North Carolina, where dozens of roads are still flooded and many have collapsed. County officials have warned residents to avoid flooded areas and not to drive around barricades.

Hundreds of drivers were stranded along the North Carolina coast after roads flooded or were damaged amid Monday’s heavy rainfall. Sister-station WECT reported that many of the drivers were stuck on Highway 17 in Brunswick County.
