If you wanted to give them a head-start, you could always run a “getting to the Sunless Citadel” adventure that gives them enough XP to hit 2nd, easily enough. As for the homebrewing a character part, new DM or not, chances are your instincts are correct.

Dec 28, 2003 · The Sunless Citadel is fun because the PCs actually get to interact with some "evil" humanoids (the kobolds) like they are weird primitives rather than Evil-Creatures-That-Must-Be-Destroyed. I tried to recreate the "yapping" of the kobolds by creating a higher-pitched staccato on stressed syllables. Meepo is a very adorable and memorable character.

I would like to find somewhere fairly remote, on the cold side, and somewhere where the ashen plain described in the module could be placed easily.
